World War I & World War II History

Essential Reading : Bismarckian Germany

An understanding of Bismarckian Germany is essential for anyone hoping to have a thorough knowledge on the origins of the First World War.

During Bismarck’s period of office, Germany laid the foundations for a future war with France by claiming the areas of Alsace and Lorraine during the Franco-Prussian war. The period also saw Europe begin to divide into two distinct factions which would ultimately be a major reason why war broke out in 1914 and why the whole of Europe became engrossed in it , rather than it being a localised affair.

Below we have documented the seven texts which we feel are essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of Bismarckian Germany –

1.    Bismarck and the German Empire – Erich Eyck

2.    Bismarck – The Man and the Statesman – A J P Taylor

3.    Bismarck – Katharine Lerman

4.    Bismarck and Germany, 1862-90 (Seminar Studies In History) - D.G. Williamson

5.    Bismarck (Routledge Historical Biographies) - E.J. Feuchtwanger

6.    Bismarck and German Unification – David Hargreaves

7.    From Bismarck to Hitler – J C G Rohl
