Battle of Britain heroes set to be honoured

A new campaign has been launched to erect a statue in Trafalgar Square as a lasting memorial in tribute to Battle of Britain hero Sir Keith Park.

The move is been financed by London based businesswoman Kerry Smith who will personally fund the statue if given the go-ahead.

Speaking seven years after the battle, RAF Marshall Lord Tedder stated –

“I do not believe it is realised how much that one man, with his leadership, his calm judgement and his skill, did to save, not only this country, but the world.”

According to Tedder, Sir Keith was the ultimate in coolness and rationality whilst making the decisions which helped to change the course of the war and condemn the Nazis to their first significant defeat.

If accepted, the memorial statue would represent a pertinent and lasting recognition of the 100 Kiwis who fought alongside their British counterparts in 1940.

Born in Thames in 1892, Park was an RAD Commander during the initial stages of the Second World War and presided over the evacuation of Dunkirk. Following on from this we has also responsible for defending southern England, including London from the bombing raids during 1940.

This should be a fitting tribute to Sir Keith and his Kiwi compatriots who did so much to safeguard Britain during the greatest external invasion threat for over 700 years.
